People will talk about your business, whether good or bad. There’s no limit to what they’ll say about you. They’ll talk about your mother, whom they’ve never met, along with your supervisor. It is bothersome but don’t try to stop them. Hugh Laurie, actor and musician, encouraged us when he released a song called “Let Them Talk” in 2011. The title says it all. But even before he did that song, Garnet Silk, a famous Jamaican Reggae singer, recorded a hit song in the ’90s with a similar title, “Keep Them Talking.” He told us why to let them talk. Let them talk because you’ve got a lot more “things” coming.
I couldn’t agree more. Mr. Laurie and Silk were on to something because you can control the narrative. How do you do that? Good question and here’s my answer. You control what they say about you by becoming more successful. Your success will become the script they discuss. In other words, let your success become their director. One of the reasons why you get angry when people talk about you is because of the lies. Never get upset when folks lie about you. They’re just talking. Let’s hope that one day, they’ll get it right.
