A manager’s role is to handle the affairs of the company and ensure that their staff have all the necessary tools to perform their jobs. A manager should never misuse their position to harm their employees, especially if there is a case against them with the human resources department. A supervisor should promptly support their staff, even if senior management makes a negative remark to HR. HR can sometimes take the stance of believing the manager’s word over the employee’s, and the employee’s argument has to be verified. In this scenario, the manager represents senior management and the employee represents the staff. Senior management doesn’t have to prove their argument because their title gives them credibility. However, a title should not automatically signal trust, despite the reality. Therefore, managers should always prioritize truth. The supervisor’s honest account should serve as the employee’s verification tool. If you are a manager, how would you respond if your staff asked, “Can we count on you?”
