ON WRITING: 10TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION: A MEMOIR OF THE CRAFT
If you have any interest in writing, this is the book to get your engine going. Mr. Stephen has cemented his name as one of the professionals with absolute command of the subject. When your name is synonymous with writing, that’s a good place to be. He has written well over thirty books and as a result, it only makes sense for a person with such advanced accomplishments to package some of his best advice to offer to the public. After reading this book you will feel as though Stephen has touched you on the shoulder with a sword.
After reading this book it feels like you’ve learned almost everything about a stranger and become close friends shortly after. Stephen was very candid about his journey as he talked about struggles with alcohol and getting past a car accident. He also talked about his loving and supportive wife that gave him the motivation and push he needed when he needed it the most. In this book, you’ll learn about writing with the room closed and reviewing with the door open. He also talked about the limited use of adverbs and why you should avoid using them. One of my favorite things about the book is when Stephen talked about developing the habit and the appetite for writing. The formula is simple: read a lot and write the same. There’s no substitute for reading but if writing is new just start with a minimum of one thousand words per day. That advice alone is worth more than the book. In the end, he brought home with a stupendous list of reading recommendations. If you are serious about writing, this is a must-read. It doesn’t matter the genre, the advice works like a panacea.
